illustrations: Karel Čapek photos & posts: washi | Film Festival Rotterdam We went to Rotterdam. To see the city and to see the movie. Weather was acceptable (read it wasn't raining) so walking through the city wasn't that unpleasant. So what to say about Rotterdam. First the good things. There are more but I'll name just two. Museum Boijmans and Cube houses. Boijmans because of its nice collection. If we skip the famous guys (I can't recall that I have seen something done by lady) I have to mention Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem. His Ixion is nice illustration for what I call "way to hell". Cube houses because of my curiosity. It was closed so I could not get in. Now the bad thing (or the thing I don't like). It seems to us (Kristyna has the same opinion) that Rotterdam was built without any proper urban planning. Bad things happened and Germans did terrain leveling here and city looks like its resurrection was done spontaneously. Of course neither I know detailed history of Rotterdam nor I'm architect, but this is the feeling I have. So there might be interesting buildings but their integration in the neighbourhood lowers esthetic value. At least for me. While we were standing on the Erasmusbrug in the evening Kristyna said, "The city looks better at night." I have to agree. back to start page... | Archives July 2008 (2) June 2008 (3) May 2008 (6) April 2008 (8) February 2008 (3) January 2008 (2) December 2007 (5) November 2007 (5) October 2007 (8) September 2007 (11) |
